What is GST?
GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a unified indirect tax imposed on the supply of goods and services in India. It has replaced multiple indirect taxes by the central and state governments, making the taxation system simple and easy.
Who should register for GST?
- Businesses with turnover above Rs. 40 lakhs (Rs. 10 lakhs for special category states) in a year should register for GST.
- The turnover threshold is Rs. 20 lakhs for businesses in North Eastern states and hilly states including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim..
- Certain businesses like interstate suppliers, e-commerce operators and those liable to pay reverse charges should register regardless of turnover.
- Even if turnover is below the threshold, businesses can opt for voluntary registration to get the input tax credit and to manage larger client’s requirements.
